Andréa Daventry

About Me

I'm an assistant professor in the philosophy department at California State University, San Bernardino, and I earned by PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2020. I've also taught at the University of Vermont and Western Carolina University. 

I mostly work on topics in ethics and social & political philosophy, and I am currently focusing on the ways in which our autonomy can be undermined when we are not properly respected as persons (either by ourselves or by others). I've also been thinking lately about the moral aspects of self-expression (e.g. Is self-expression good, and if so, why? Do we ever have an obligation to express ourselves regarding non-moral matters? Is self-expression related to integrity? When and why do others have an obligation to see us as we want to be seen?). But really, if a topic seems relevant to how I should be living my life, then I am interested in it.

Some things I get excited about other than reading, writing, and teaching philosophy include: hanging out with my chihuahuas (see below), baked goods, snow, 80's and 90's action movies, and music (ranging from chamber music to metal).
